What Leadership Means to Me

I’ve been in the workforce for more than 30 years, military and federal. Like most people, my view of what an effective leader is has changed over the years. Take Steve Jobs for example. From the articles I’ve read about him, he was an amazing “Leader” but a horrific manager. He was cruel to employees and even fired by the board of directors. When he was fired, Apple stocks tumbled, and the company suffered. They brought him back and boom, Apple is on top again. That leads me to the question, was Steve Jobs a great leader or a great innovator? Was he a fearless visionary with the strength to push his vision through at all costs.? Did his vision change the world or was it his tenacity to push his vision through to fruition that changed the world?
I believe a great leader has to encompass all of the traits, plus more. Having a vision is the ability to foresee something that is not yet there. Having the tenacity and strength to push the vision through is an entirely different skill set. A great leader need both, plus more. I’m not certain that Steve Jobs encompassed what many would call charisma. He did not move people by his words or ability to speak to the minds and hearts of many. Maybe he did not need charisma because he had products. It was his innovations that moved the hearts and minds of many.
Theoretical Foundations
Jack Mezirow is considered the father of the “transformative learning movement” which proposes that learners can transform their way of thinking based on new information received (What is transformative learning, 2020). Transformative learning exceeds merely acquiring skill and knowledge, it takes a deep dive into fundamentally changing perceptions and finding meaning and understanding in our lives (What is transformative learning, 2020).
My goal is to transform entire communities. I see my work with Re-Self as a vehicle to help transform how women, particularly, WOC, perceive themselves and provide them with knowledge that will empower them to change family structures and communities
